Highlight: Grand Place in the center of Brussels (from the photo above). It’s widely known as one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Europe and I couldn’t agree more! You must visit these ornate, historic buildings dating from the 17th century once during the day and once at night – the lights make the architecture even more magical.
Budget: Pack light, skip taxis and take public transportation. We took the metro from the airport to Central Station. Our bags were small so it was an easy walk to our hotel. The city is very walkable.
Splurge: I easily spent 50 euros or more in chocolate… but I had to bring Belgian chocolate back for my hubby! I bought an assortment of blends and truffles from various places but I recommend Mary Chocolatier.
Eat: Belgian waffles!! Conveniently located right next to the Grand Place, go to Maison Dandoy – who they say has been making the best Belgian waffles since 1829. You can choose to top them with caramel, chocolate, Nutella, fruit, ice-cream and more! I chose strawberries and vanilla ice cream. Soooooo yummy.
We were craving burgers one night and took an Uber to the recommended, B34 and it was delicious.
Adventure: Rent a car and take a road trip to other small towns in Belgium! We used Expedia to rent from “Sixt“. They have a few locations in Brussels, but we picked up our car easily from Central Station. The staff was great and even gave us a free upgrade. Don’t forget your drivers license!
